HMP Oakwood, Midlands, UK

HMP Oakwood is a large (2200 prisioners) PFI financed Category C prison in the Midands UK. It first opened in 2012, and among other goals, aims to offer modern facilities. It was built to BREEAM specifications.

Why Distech Controls technology?

This critical facility was looking for a secure plant room control solution, to replace 23 main plant panels from Schneider Electric along with 35 subsidary panels for the ‘wet’ systems and 38 AHU panels plus numerous ECB controllers for the natural ventilation system. A new control panel has been supplied for the central Boiler plant room which provides district heating to the site. The specifications included an open solution that could communicate with the supervision system, using multiple protocols such as BACnet and Modbus for metering. It was also essential that any communications rewiring was kept to a minimum. A combination of S1000 IP controllers and ECB BACnet MSTP controllers are being used to meet this objective. As prisons are critical facilities, the facility manager also wanted a secure and reliable solution utilizing the existing fibre network.

This has now been achieved thanks to the ECY-S1000 IP controllers: they are modular, flexible and scalable. These controllers interact with our EC-Net supervision platform in real-time for faultless precision and safety.

Solutions installed in the building:

  • EC-Net Supervision Platform
  • ECLYPSE Designer – Web-based graphic design and visualization interface
  • ECLYPSE Connected System Controllers – ECY-S1000 / ECB600

Stakeholders:

  • System integrator: Clarkson Controls
  • Security solutions integrator: G4S
  • Client: Ministry of Justice
