Acuity Brands National Electrical Code (NEC) Compliance Update: Wire Insulation Color

Acuity Brands is committed to meeting all national safety codes. Acuity products are in full compliance with the new section of the 2020 edition of the National Electrical Code (NEC) addressing the identification of control conductor insulation (Section 410.69). This new section prohibits the use of wire insulation colors reserved for the grounded branch circuit conductor (white or gray) or the equipment grounding conductor (green or green with a yellow stripe) for field installation. Currently, it is standard practice to use gray for the negative dimming lead in 0-10V applications. Due to the new section in the NEC, gray may no longer be used for this application. Consequently, NEMA has released a new standard (NEMA 100-2021) which specifies a visual reference for wire colors as well as a bulletin identifying that pink may be used to replace the gray color currently used in 0-10V dimming applications (Bulletin No. 119). Our customers will see pink negative dimming leads on Acuity controls, sensors, and luminaires on all newly produced products as of January 1, 2022. Customers may also see gray wire continued to be used with a piece of pink tape wrapped around the wire. Under the “re-identification” clause of Section 410.69, this is acceptable and compliant with NEC. In addition, all instruction sheets and other product documentation already published on AcuityBrands.com will reference the new pink wire color. The effectivity date for this change is January 1, 2022.
