Residents of Winter Park, Florida, are fortunate to access a one-of-a-kind facility in their neighborhood. Wellness, fitness, and medicine are all under one roof at the Center for Health & Wellbeing. Visitors can see healthcare professionals, walk, exercise, swim, lounge, eat and socialize in a setting that is warm and welcoming from the outside in. And this is absolutely by design.
Duda|Paine Architects' stunning architecture is showcased by award-winning illumination envisioned by the team at Cline Bettridge Bernstein Lighting Design (CBB).
“Architects and designers at Duda|Paine are always very creative, and they have a real understanding of light,” said Francesca Bettridge, principal at CBB. “We start with an awareness of the materials and work together to determine how lighting will accentuate each space."
Gotham EVO® and Incito™ recessed luminaires are prevalent throughout the center’s public spaces providing general illumination and accent lighting in the atrium, reception area, fitness center, multi-purpose rooms, corridors and stairwells, and swimming pool.
“One of the things we appreciate about the EVO and Incito families is that you can mix and match on the same ceiling,” said Bettridge. “With comparable aperture sizing between the lines and consistent reflector finishes, you can install an EVO downlight next to an Incito accent. And from below, they look the same, creating a very quiet ceiling.”
“EVO and Incito also use the same LED modules, so the light output and colors are consistent,” said Sang Yup Lee, senior associate at CBB. “This consistency contributes to the elegance of the lighting design and enables us to meet the aesthetic demands of the space.”
An atrium known as the Commons is the centerpiece of the 78,000 sq. ft. space. The second floor features a popular walking track and lounge space that partially overhangs the main floor. EVO 4” downlights are recessed in the overhang to illuminate the walkways below as visitors navigate through the facility. Incito 4” accent lighting is also strategically placed along the Commons main floor perimeter ceiling. Interspersed with its EVO counterpart, it serves to accent the beautiful wooden columns along the atrium while creating multiple layers of light.
This layering of EVO downlights and wall washers, which provide even distribution to horizontal and vertical surfaces, with Incito distributions, for directional and accent lighting, is a consistent theme throughout the public spaces.
In the Nourish Coffee Bar + Kitchen, EVO 4” wall washers and corner wall washers highlight the unusual combination of wood, painted upper walls, and subway tiles. The warm 3000K lighting, mounted primarily over the counter and food preparation area, supplements the seating area's statement pendants.
Lighting in the athletic center's natatorium dramatically emulates the night sky. Significant natural light comes in from a window of walls, with additional light coming from a series of circular skylights above the two pools. The skylights inspired CBB to create “constellations” across the ceiling, using wide beam Incito 2” downlights and EVO 4” and 6” downlights in random patterns to represent planets and stars.
The science behind the lighting design is anything but random, however. Natatorium building codes are very specific about the amount of light on the water surface and surrounding edges. And, of course, all luminaires must be natatorium-rated.
“Very few manufacturers make LED luminaires with this rating,” said Lee. “Gotham was able to offer three different sizes, each with excellent output and color, in addition to the natatorium finish.”
Additional EVO 4” wall washers and EVO 4” corner wall washers are recessed in a dropped ceiling around the perimeter of the room, illuminating the pool deck below.
“Gotham worked with us to create a solution so the LED drivers could be stored in a room nearby,” Lee said. “This gives the center’s team exceptional flexibility for cost-effective maintenance. They can address most lighting concerns without first having to drain the pool.”
The Center for Health & Wellbeing has won multiple lighting design awards, and it’s not difficult to see why. CBB successfully illuminated and highlighted Duda|Paine’s exceptional design to create a warm, inviting, and healthy environment.
“In any lighting project, our ultimate goal is for people to be happy and the place to look great,” said Bettridge. “Beyond the awards, the feedback we've received is that the facility is well used, so we consider that a success!’”
