Discreet architectural lighting keeps visitors guessing in Indiana home

September 25, 2024

Visitors to this custom-built home in Westfield, Indiana, are often perplexed when they walk through the stunning residence for the first time. But it's not the exceptional design - with features like accent ceilings, wood beams, and bespoke luminaire pendants – that they question. The first query is usually, "Where is the light coming from?"

As homeowners worked through the building plans, lighting was always top of mind. They wanted to emphasize the craftsmanship of the architectural focal points throughout their new house but not detract from the striking design. Ultimately, they selected Aculux’s Lini luminaires to provide illumination throughout the space.

“We liked the idea of modernizing beyond the typical can lighting,” said the homeowner. “Lini is aesthetically pleasing and complements our traditional look.”

The minimalist, miniature linear downlight is only one inch wide and is featured throughout the main and lower levels and the upstairs corridors. Depending on a space's specific lighting needs, a 4-cell or 6-cell version is utilized. All luminaires are flangeless and recessed into the white gypsum ceilings.

“It was so interesting to watch the installers mount the metal boxes for Lini, and then the drywallers come through to mud around each fixture," the homeowner said. "There are no holes in the ceiling and no visible trim, so the luminaires are so discreet.”

While most of the luminaires provide general illumination, the homeowners also chose adjustable 1" Lini fixtures that are used as accent lighting. For example, some luminaires in the central kitchen and bar area are tilted to highlight artwork or custom cabinets. And, in the basement wine cellar, 4-cell Lini luminaires show off an irregular 3D stone wall. The same luminaires, when utilized as wall washes, add warmth and interest to corridors while brightening up the windowless basement.

"We absolutely love the outcome," said the homeowner. "The Lini luminaires are always a talking point with our guests.”
