Supporting Architectural Design with Aculux

In Santa Fe, New Mexico, homeowner Thomas Scott’s thoughtfully designed residence brings together architecture, interior design and lighting into a cohesive experience. The architectural design introduced unique technical challenges that required equally precise lighting solutions. Designed by Deborah Lloyd Forrest, FASID, with architects Lawrence and Rose Adams, the home emphasizes clean ceiling planes, integrated detailing and a carefully tuned visual environment.

At the entry portal, five Aculux Lini linear recessed downlights introduce a subtle architectural highlight, reinforcing the home’s clean geometry while guiding arrival through light. With 9- and 10-foot doors extending seamlessly to the ceiling and no visible headers, maintaining a perfectly flat ceiling plane was essential.

Across the residence, 140 Aculux AX3 adjustable downlights were installed in a range of beam spreads, including 12, 20, 35, and 50 degrees, to support ambient, task and accent lighting throughout the home. Each fixture was positioned with exacting accuracy, many aligned using laser guidance, to maintain visual consistency across the space.

“One of the things that was really important was being able to make minor adjustments,” said Scott. “Everything had to line up perfectly, and the flexibility of the fixtures made that possible.”

In key areas, acoustical plaster ceilings added depth and material complexity, requiring careful coordination between fixture installation and finish conditions. All adjustable fixtures were selected to provide long-term flexibility, allowing lighting to evolve alongside the home’s use.

As needs shift over time, fixtures can be re-aimed and refined without requiring major modifications.

“Because of the pinhole trims, there’s almost no perceivable glare,” said Scott. “That makes a huge difference.”

Since completion, the home has hosted a range of gatherings, with guests consistently noticing the lighting.
