Determination and Teamwork Leads to Multiple Product Awards

Gotham® Lighting, an Acuity Brand’s company and global leader in downlighting systems, was recently recognized by the 2021 Illuminating Engineering Society of North America (IESNA) Progress Report with two awards for innovation for the EVO® and Incito™ 2” Tilt and Rotate Cylinders and the Incito™ 4” Direct-Indirect Wall Mount Cylinder. Additionally, both cylinders were awarded the 2021 Product Innovation Awards (PIA) which recognizes innovative LED and solid-state luminaires and fixtures on the market, while also spotlighting the players behind the components that make up these light sources. The efforts that made these recognitions possible were deeply founded on the creative collaboration and dedication of one exceptional team.

Achieving greatness.

The concept development, design, and engineering for Gotham’s EVO® and Incito™ 2” Tilt and Rotate Cylinders and  Incito™ 4” Direct-Indirect Wall Mount Cylinder took place in a 12 month period, and were executed by a diverse group of remarkable engineers, designers, and product experts working cross-functionally and cross-geographically to make it happen.

According to Vice President of Design Engineering, Douglas Grove, the success of products like the EVO and Incito starts with setting the vision upfront.  “Even though our team is eclectic and diverse, everyone has a sense of ownership and understands what the end game is.” Grove continues, “We don’t need all quarterbacks. We need receivers and running backs who can inspire and motivate each other to move the ball, or in this case, cylinders, forward. And we did it together.”

The Gotham team embraced the challenge of exploring the art of the possible.  They engaged each other in robust conversations and critical peer reviews that challenged and inspired team members to collaborate across design, engineering, and manufacturing disciplines to ensure optimal solutions that considered all aspects of the customer experience.

In addition, this tight-knit unit worked closely with key suppliers to ensure a viable design, with a robust supply chain that can deliver high quality products quickly and reliably.

With an eye on developing more sustainable manufacturing, the Gotham product team shortened supply chain steps by moving component manufacturing from Asia to North America over the last several years. And because Gotham cylinders are designed on a modular platform, Gotham can continue to extend this cylinder family without compromising key design features or supply chain logistical advantages.

Internally, this allowed the team to cut machine time by nearly 50%, substantially reducing process resources required.  This mindset of integrating a compact, modular design with sustainable manufacturing processes has enhanced product aesthetics, reduced packaging, and decreased the overall carbon footprint of the Gotham Cylinder family.

IESNA’s recognition of innovative new products through the annual Progress Report is prestigious and creates a great sense of pride among the Gotham team. “The work ethic and dedication of our entire Gotham team is unmatched. This group carries an enthusiasm for wanting to deliver the best to our customers, agent partners, and end users in every respect.” This recognition is a beautiful acknowledgement to the commitment we have to developing meaning products that elevate our spaces.” Business Unit Leader and Senior Product Manager, Rosa Peredo, shares.  Gotham continues its legacy of product leadership that originated in New York City back in 1938 and remains intensely focused on expanding the boundaries of high-quality downlighting solutions.
