CARB Certifies All UV Lighting Product Families from Healthcare Lighting®

Product portfolio offers three diverse types of UV light disinfection* technologies                                                                  for use in indoor spaces

ATLANTA, November 17, 2021 – Acuity Brands, Inc. (NYSE: AYI) announced that the California Air Resources Board (CARB) has certified that all UV lighting product families from Healthcare Lighting® available today have been tested and found to comply with the State of California’s electrical safety and ozone requirements for Indoor Air Cleaning Devices. The product families consist of HDM™ fixtures with Care222® technology, EvolAIR UV™ luminaires powered by UV Angel Clean Air™ Technology, and PulseX™ devices with Violet Defense® Technology.  In addition, these three product families are registered, or are currently waiting on registration, in the eight U.S. states that currently require state EPA registration.

“Our Healthcare Lighting UV product portfolio offers a diverse set of disinfection* technology solutions to meet our customers’ varied requirements for reducing active pathogens1 on surfaces and/or in the air, including strategies for occupied and unoccupied spaces,” said Cleveland Blankenship, Business Unit Leader, Healthcare Lighting. “We are very pleased that all of our UV lighting products are now CARB-certified to confirm that they meet California’s stringent emission standards.  All such certified devices produce an ozone emission concentration of less than 0.050 parts per million.”

The Healthcare UV lighting product portfolio consists of:

HDM luminaires with Care222 technology which feature a filtered far-UVC module with patent-pending dosing electronics: The Care222 module is the first far-UVC filtered 222nm solution to be UL listed for use in occupied spaces. Results from laboratory testing and clinical studies suggest that the filtered UV light emitted from the Care222 lamp can inactivate known viruses and other pathogens1, including SARS-CoV-22, on surfaces and in air.  When used within appropriate parameters, the 222nm wavelength emitted from the Care222 lamp inactivates viruses and bacteria at energy levels that do not penetrate living tissue in skin or beyond the tear layer in eyes, allowing spaces in which the lamps are used to remain occupied during use.

EvoAIR UV fixtures powered by UV Angel Clean Air™ Technology which use controlled air to reduce pathogenic bioburden1 in occupied spaces: This automated continuous UVC air treatment system continuously circulates pathogen-contaminated air through a sealed and filtered  chamber and treats it with high-intensity 254nm UV-C light to inactivate bacteria, fungus, and viruses before returning air to the space.

PulseX devices with Violet Defense Technology which feature a patented pulsed xenon lamp and lens configuration to deliver broad-spectrum UV light, leading to a quick reduction of pathogenic bioburden1: Available in drop-in ceiling, recessed hard ceiling, or surface ceiling/wall mount options. An integrated occupancy sensor and optional nLight® wired controls safeguard against a treatment cycle occurring when spaces are occupied.

2 In a 2020 study, Hiroshima University confirmed that under laboratory conditions, a dose of 3 mJ/cm2 of 222nmUVC irradiation, with an exposure time of 30 seconds inactivated 99.7% of SARS-CoV-2 on a surface. Ushio’s Care222 UV-C disinfection module was placed 24 cm above the surface of the plates in which the viral samples were placed.
