Is Tunable White actually circadian lighting? My clients are getting mixed messages!

July 3, 2018

Answer:
Tunable white lighting is not a synonym for true circadian lighting. Circadian lighting is electric light that mimics the natural transition of daylight throughout the day. When speaking with clients, re-emphasize that tunable white lighting is based on the principle that people respond differently to different color temperatures. When the CCT is warm, it relaxes us. When the CCT is cooler, it stimulates us. Tunable white lighting provides occupants in a space with the means to adjust color temperature based on the activity at hand. For example, when a teacher wants the class to calm down and focus on individual tasks, such as reading, a warmer CCT will help. Or think about a healthcare setting when a doctor is performing an examination, a cooler CCT may be more appropriate for focus and acuity.
