Award-Winning Open Office Lighting Case Study

When a leading Canadian financial leasing company recently selected a new office location in Ontario, Canada, it also made the critical decision to transform from a 31,000-square-foot traditional office setting, to an open concept layout – essentially eliminating all walls and private offices.

And while its primary goal was to unite its workforce and encourage collaboration, the new floor plan unintentionally created a significant lighting challenge.  Specifically, the company now needed solutions to properly illuminate the exposed workspace to accommodate a variety of tasks, while                                                                                   contributing to the aesthetics of an open area.

A variety of Acuity Brands® products were chosen to work together in order to help achieve the company’s desire for effective and attractive solutions. Peerless® Bruno fluorescent fixtures and Lithonia Lighting® VT Series LED luminaires were installed as the primary overhead lighting throughout the space. Mark Architectural Lighting™ SLOT 2 LED luminaires added quality lighting and visual interest to gathering and collaborative spaces, while complementing unique ceiling materials such as wood paneling. EVO® LED downlights from Gotham® were installed in the lobby and in select spaces such as the kitchen, break area and hallways.

The lighting was integrated with an nLight® control system from Sensor Switch®, which helps adjust the fixtures to desired light levels and reduce energy use. “With help from the lighting, the open space has contributed to the company’s sense of community and overall collaboration,” said Erika J. McCarthy, interior designer for Comley van Brussel Design + Management and lead designer on the project. “The client came from a space that was rather dated, so the modernized space illuminated and accented with Acuity Brands fixtures and combined with natural daylighting has contributed to overall employee satisfaction and productivity.”

The high-performance fluorescent and LED sources of the new design provide quality lighting, while helping the company meet its sustainability objectives. The project was completed in September 2012 and received an ARIDO 2013 Design Award of Merit.
