Grocery Retailer LED Lighting Case Study

Nestled just outside of Santa Barbara, California in the coastal community of Carpinteria, a leading grocery store was in desperate need of an upgrade. The major chain had discussed remodeling a store in its network to test how to it could cut energy usage by 50 percent. The renovation included expanding the Carpinteria store from 18,000-square-feet to 43,000-square-feet, with a wall-to-wall redesign.

One of the most important considerations in store design is lighting. The chain worked with DC Engineering and DMA Lighting to determine the appropriate integrated LED lighting system.

Integrating LEDs and Daylighting

After determining the benefits of an integrated lighting solution, the retailer began installing LED lighting, daylighting and digital controls technology at the renovated store.

Approximately 400 Lithonia Lighting® Z Series LED strip fixtures illuminate the main sales floors, while Lithonia Lighting RT Series LED luminaires were installed in the entry vestibule, pharmacy, delicatessen, seafood and customer service departments.

In order to bring natural light into the customer-facing sections of the store, Sunoptics® Signature Series High Performance Prismatic Skylights were installed to enhance the produce section. Through Sunoptics light control louvers, adjustments can be made to the amount of daylight entering the store from the prismatic skylights.

“There are other companies that can provide skylights, but they do not have the intelligence to speak with the LED lighting systems like Sunoptics and Acuity Brands® products,” said Shauna Tefft, Project Manager at DMA Lighting.

As a way to enhance energy savings, increase fixture life and reduce maintenance, nLIGHT® network lighting controls from SensorSwitch® were installed to communicate with LED fixtures and skylight louvers.

Additional products from Acuity Brands were integrated throughout the store, from the front-end entryways, all the way to the back freezers and receiving areas.

Benefits Beyond Energy Savings

Now up and running, the upgraded store is using approximately one-third of the power on a square-foot basis compared to the old store. Overall, both the chain and its store were pleased, but so were store employees. Its store director mentioned the lighting system helps make merchandise look crystal clear, make the store a better place to work, and provide a better shopping environment for customers.
