PNC Bank Case Study
PNC Financial Services, one of the top 10 largest banking institutions in the United States, has incorporated state-of-the-art, environmentally sustainable technology in all of its new construction for more than a decade. As technologies advance, PNC aimed to create a net zero energy branch – a building with no net energy consumption. And, since lighting consumes approximately 37 percent of energy in commercial buildings (Source: U.S. DOE), the right lighting was a key component to achieve net zero status.
PNC experimented with net zero energy buildings in the past, with its first installation in its corporate offices in Philadelphia. More recently, PNC chose to use direct current (DC) power distribution in its new location in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. It needed lighting solutions that would meet low-voltage requirements and work with its DC FlexZone™ Ceiling Grid System – a ceiling suspension system from Armstrong® that can distribute safe, low-voltage direct current (DC) power to electrical devices.
Known for its development of the industry’s most comprehensive LED lighting portfolio of dimmable, controllable, low-voltage 24-volt luminaires, Acuity Brands products were selected for the project. Specifically, PNC selected RT Series low-voltage, 24-volt LED luminaires from Lithonia Lighting® to illuminate its facilities, and meet its DC requirements.
Low-voltage 24-volt RT Series LED luminaires are designed and engineered to maximize the benefits of LED lighting, featuring options for dimming and integrating digital lighting control directly into the fixture. The high-efficacy light engine delivers long life and excellent color, ensuring a superior quality lighting installation that is highly efficient and sustainable. RT Series LED luminaires – along with the entire Acuity Brands low-voltage portfolio – are EMerge™ Alliance registered – an association known for developing standards leading to rapid adoption of DC power distribution.
Since opening the Ft. Lauderdale branch in January of 2013, the bank has experienced several net positive months.
