Dynamic Lighting: one year later...and where we are going

April 25, 2017

By David Ciccarelli, Acuity Brands Lighting

Almost one year ago I posted The Debut of Dynamic Lighting on the nLight Network on my LinkedIn page.

As I look back, the most significant step was the system approach.

Many manufacturers have added tunable white to their existing luminaire lines using legacy controls, but we were bolder--we added it to our controls AND luminaire product lines together as a system.

nLight® system from Acuity Controls is our network, and of course our Fresco™ family of controls works great with the system.

Another significant step was to craft a solution that was within reach of even a classroom budget. We’ve also gone beyond tunable white to introduce two new dynamic features of Grayscale and Color Accent on the nLight network.

Our driving principle is that dynamic lighting should go mainstream in a subtle and functional way. That's why the entire collection is called Mainstream Dynamic.

In a year, we've introduced a slew of luminaire forms in a steady roll-out:

People in the know will recognize the effort it takes to do this in a year's time.

But there is much more to do: more forms will be coming, and the past year has taught us a lot about controls, so expect more on that front.

We think we've made a significant breakthrough in how controls need to work to usher in Circadian Lighting, and we'll be showing it off at LIGHTFAIR® International 2017, May 9-11 in Philadelphia, Booth #1713.

On that note, if you’re attending LIGHTFAIR , check out our “Lunch & Unlearn” Wednesday, May 10th at 12:15 p.m. to learn about our tunable white solution for the classroom, and our approach to color control and theatrical-class dimming.

My next article will be on Circadian Lighting, I’ll share what we've learned in terms of the various categories that will form and what the systems will be asked to do to keep up. Keep an eye out for the posting.
