Next Gen Lighting Designers Show Their Stuff with RUBIK Luminaires

Penn State AE’s best and brightest join Acuity Brands at Architectural Lighting’s 30th Anniversary fete in NYC

We were in New York City last week as a sponsor of Architectural Lighting's 30th Anniversary attended by more than 300 lighting designers.  The event theme was "Lighting: the Next Frontier," which was fitting because we showcased our amazing RUBIK™ family of recessed LED luminaires for grid ceilings that offers dynamic features such as tunable white, grayscale and color accent.

RUBIK is a lighting system that simply has to be seen. You can do that here.  Whenever we show RUBIK it turns heads and the Architectural Lighting event was no exception.  What made it even better this time is that we also hosted four, fourth-year students from the Penn State Architectural Engineering Department, who were on hand to present original RUBIK-based lighting designs.  The student designs were part of a design competition called “Technology Empowering Creativity: An Exploration by the Students of Penn State.”

Lighting design firm C M Kling Associates Inc. of Alexandria, VA set up the challenge: to demonstrate how lighting fused with technology can improve where we work, live and play, and how it can make every day spaces and places extraordinary. CM Kling‘s David Ghatan and Sarah Richter provided the project application: an Office Building Fitness Center.

Under the apt guidance of their professor, Richard Mistrick, PhD, the Penn State students experimented with different lighting layout decisions using RUBIK configurations.

Student designs were judged by an expert industry panel, made of up CM Kling, Jackson Ning with Kugler Ning Lighting Design and several Acuity professionals.

The winning students, Hunter Mowry, Tena Pettit, Luis Carrasquillo and Hyung Kim, participated in our booth during the evening event, met with area designers and presented their designs.  Judging from their smiles, they enjoyed the evening just as much as we did.
