Impressive Impression: LED Lighting Boosts Aesthetics, Cuts Costs for Hospitals

November 19, 2016

First impressions can fuel a relationship. Or extinguish it before it starts.

Dignity Health Hospitals is doing much better in the first impressions department, thanks to a complete exterior lighting overhaul at each of its 38 campuses using customized LED lighting. It’s a testament to how forward-looking organizations can leverage advanced lighting technologies to bolster their reputations, while also saving money and furthering sustainability goals.

Here’s a brief look at how Dignity Health’s problem was solved:

Burned out lights … dark parking lots … a generally gloomy exterior. Not exactly an aesthetically pleasing environment, for patients and other stakeholders when they arrived on a Dignity Health campus. Because patients often link overall appearance to a facility’s ability to provide high-quality health care, the company’s leaders knew the problem could only get worse. And a complete overhaul was needed, not a retrofit, because existing luminaires were 20+ years old and required replacement.

According to Paul Gerner, Dignity Health Area Director, the project would be vital to the long-term health of the organization itself.

“How we care for our patients, visitors and staff … involves hundreds of individual touch points. (It starts) when you first drive onto a Dignity Health campus. We wanted that experience to be just as great at night as it is in the daytime,” explained Gerber.

Upon installation, the Lithonia Lighting® and American Electric Lighting® LED luminaires, motion sensors and other fixtures we provided immediately contributed to Dignity Health’s modernization and sustainability goals. Metrics revealed the lighting has the potential to reduce energy usage by over 50 percent and greenhouse gas emissions by 5,284 metric tons, a major step toward the company’s goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions 40 percent by 2020.

In addition, the virtually maintenance-free LED luminaires are expected to decrease annual maintenance costs by $505,000 across the 38 facilities. The project payback ranges from 5 to 10 years, per site.

But according to Gerber, some of the most impressive results aren’t as tangible. “The lighting upgrade made our campuses feel safer and more inviting … and visitors and staff find it easier to navigate our night environment.”
