Architectural Lighting Catches Up With the Modern Office Spaces

January 10, 2017

According to the Building Owners and Managers Association International, Class A commercial buildings are “prestigious, with high quality standard finishes, state of the art systems, exceptional accessibility and a definite market presence.”  To achieve this status, office space layout and technology in these buildings has changed dramatically.  One thing that hasn’t changed much is office lighting…until now.

Thanks to the versatility of digital LED lighting, there are fantastic new architectural lighting solutions that allow architects to provide a tailored experience without the cost and complexity of traditional specialty lighting.

This new breed of solid-state lighting embodies contemporary, upscale and smart design that architects seek.  It’s practical and not overwhelming. It calls attention to the space and helps illuminate architectural features.

Noted architect Wey Lee, principal of Environetics™, sums it up nicely in this video.

This lighting is also intelligent and future-proof. It integrates environment sensors in the fixture, and using advanced drivers, like our eldoLED® line, as well as wired and wireless networked controllers – like our new nLight® Air. This lets building owners and tenants employ energy-saving LED lighting today and enable new functionality – often with a simple firmware upgrade.

And this is not proof of concept stuff. For example, our Mark Architectural Lighting™ brand, a recognized industry leader in specification-grade recessed light, offers these advanced technologies in its portfolio:

  • Indoor positioning and wayfinding: luminaires that have dual communications technologies: visual light communications (VLC) and Bluetooth® low energy (BLE) in the fixture enable positioning and wayfinding throughout the building. In addition to facilitating navigation, these systems capture in-building traffic and occupancy data that can help optimize building and tenant performance.
  • Tunable lighting:  two drivers that work together on the same network to enable dynamic color tuning - White and Color. One driver handles deep dimming and the other handles color temperature. Tunable lighting can not only save energy, it can improve employee productivity, with the ability to easily adjust lighting throughout the day through pre-set color temperatures. Research even suggests that lighting can have a positive effect on alertness and attention.
  • Unified building management: because they are IP-network enabled, these systems can interface with Building Management Systems to form part of a unified building automation system.

Architectural lighting has come a long way.  We’re excited by the evolution of the space. It’s a testimony to the belief that style, substance and functionality can coexist in a lighting system.
